Toys of the Past
The first few snowflakes of the season fell and the wind was blowing strong, but we had an awesome trip to the Troy Historical Museum! Toys of the PastOur first stop was a visit to the General Store. Here we learned some of the services that the General Store provided. This is where pioneers mailed their letters, bought medicine, purchased pots, pans, toys, or even baby chicks! We had lots of fun playing with the old time toys and we even made our own pioneer toy to take home! Log CabinIt was cold outside, but when we entered the Log Cabin the fire was burning nice and warm. In the Log Cabin we learned about everyday life of a pioneer family. The first graders were interested to learn how pioneers lived without indoor plumbing, how bedding was made, and the importance of a fireplace. We even churned our own butter!! It sure was delicious!! Poppleton School with Ms. PostWe had so much fun learning with Ms. Post in Poppleton School! Upon meeting Ms. Post out in front of the school. The girls were instructed to curtsy on their way into class, then the boys followed by bowing politely to their 'teacher'. The students read from tradition McGuffey readers, practiced their writing with chalk on a chalkboard, and completed math questions, while displaying their very best manners and respect. The best part was when Ms. Post enacted traditional consequences experienced by pioneer children. Even the Dunce Cap came out at the very end! The first graders really enjoyed stepping back in time and 'living' the life of Michigan pioneers from the 1800's.

What a FUN filled day!! We had perfect weather for parading down to the fire station where the fire fighters greeted us with high-fives and fire safety bracelets. After arriving back to Johnson we continued the fun with a classroom celebration. The first graders were able to choose from a variety of activities and snacked on some delicious treats. Thank you to everyone who was able to join on this special day! An extra big THANK YOU to Mrs. Nigro who took charge of the planning and organizing! What a huge success! |
